Out of the blue a very nice guy called Jack recently uploaded a photo he found in his grandfather’s house in Ireland and sent me a link. He uploaded it to Wikimedia Commons, which is a1897 great idea for photos out of copyright to save them, make them publicly and make them searchable. I might well do this with some our older family photos.
The photos are labelled “A” COMPANY 1st. BN. THE ROYAL IRISH WINNERS OF THE REGIMENTAL SHIELD 1896-97 Irish Regiment’s Football team in 1897 with E M Panter-Downes behind the trophy.
Captain Edward Panter -Downes was killed at Mons in the early days of WW1. He was the father of the author Mollie Panter-Downes.
